Description
High performance high speed steel with durability and a good degree of toughness.
Applications
The steel is used for special tools, which are predominantly manufactured from plates e.g. tufting knives and loopers in the carpet industry as well as slot cutters or wood machining blades. Some steel bar applications using complicated tools require optimum dimensional stability at increased operational temperatures, e.g. for viscose pump housings.
Physical properties (avarage values) at ambient temperature
Modulus of elasticity [103 x N/mm2]: 217
Density [g/cm3]: Approx. 8.40
Soft Annealing
Heat to 820-850oC, cool slowly in furnace. This will produce a maximum Brinell hardness of 265.
Stress Relieving
Stress relieving to remove machining stresses should be carried out by heating to 600-650oC, holding for one hour at heat, followed by air cooling. This operation is performed to reduce distortion during heat treatment.
Hardening
Harden from a temperature of 1220 - 1260oC followed by oil or warm bath quenching at 550oC.
Tempering
Tempering temperature: 550-570oC, at least 2x for 64 - 66 HRC.
Tempering Temperature (oC) vs. Hardness (HRC)
100oC | 200oC | 300oC | 400oC | 450oC | 500oC | 550oC | 600oC | 650oC |
65.0 | 63.0 | 61.5 | 62.0 | 62.5 | 64.0 | 65.0 | 63.0 | 58.0 |
Forging
Hot forming temperature: 1100-900oC.
Machinability
No data.
Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion resistance of this alloy is better than that of plain carbon steels. However it will rust unless given protective treatment.
